Dark Things is a supernatural thriller that involves a Guardian Angel, Mahatiel, who is desperately in search of a way to redeem and forgive himself for a previously disastrous failure involving the loss of life of a young woman he was assigned to protect. He finds a chance at redemption when he is assigned to protect a young, dynamic and head strong, African-American woman named Virginia Sills who has been brutally raped and swept up into events well beyond her control.

For Mahatiel, this new assignment not only turns out to be a chance at redeeming himself, but also turns out to be the most trying assignment he’s ever had. At one point he finds himself having to deal with Virginia’s stubborn streak at the worst possible time--surrounded by demon spirits bent on destroying him and the girl.

There are several other factors which serve to rapidly complicate the situation and send it spinning out of control.

1)                 Mahatiel, in his pride, refuses to call for help, feeling that since he failed his first assignment alone, he must accomplish this assignment--alone. Consequently, he is wounded, and finds it necessary to adopt human form to complete his mission. He adopts the form of an African-American, and as a black man, faces a whole new realm of challenges.  During the course of events he learns a very valuable lesson about  the dangers of following one's pride, instead of  the Wisdom of the God...

2)                 Virginia becomes pregnant by the violent rape. A prophecy comes forth regarding the future of the child, one destined to change the destiny of his country and impact the world.  All Hell comes against Virginia to destroy both her and her unborn child. And in the dark hours before dawn, the streets of Washington, DC become a massive battle ground  for Angels  and demons, over the souls of men...

3)                 Mahatiel discovers that one of the ruling evil spirits assigned against them, is the same one that took the life of the soul he lost earlier. He must fight his personal anger and desire for revenge, so that neither costs him his current mission and the life of the new soul he must guard...

History of the Book's Main Characters

Our Two Heroes…

Mahatiel, was originally created by God as a Messenger Angel. After the fall of Lucifer he was reassigned. Several millenniums later, after Satan's intrusion in the Garden of Eden, the fall of man, the rise of evil, crime, witchcraft, murder, demon worship, idolatry and the like, Mahatiel was made a Judgment Angel. He was one of a specially selected group of Angels who were given the job of bringing judgment to those who had abused the grace of God and the people of God, to the point of exhausting the very patience of God Himself. We see examples of these kind of Angels in 2 Chronicles 32:21, 2 Kings 19:32 - 35, 1 Chronicles 21:1, 15, 16, Joshua 5: 13-15, Revelation 16: 1-12

Part of the back story is that the Lord began to observe Mahatiel in the performance of his duties as a Judgment Angel, and He noticed that Mahatiel lacked compassion in his office. Human life began to hold too little value to him. He did not value human life as much as the precious thing it was. He carried out his job well--too well.

The Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ noted to him that Judgment was something that should be done with regret, and not careless disregard or insensitivity...

The Father decided to make Mahatiel a Guardian Angel, charge him with protecting life, so that he could learn the value of it again. Mahatiel did it--but only out of obedience. He truly did not value those he guarded. He did it with his will, but not with the depths of his heart. The result was that on one assignment a young woman he was assigned to protect fell prey to a severe attack of depression brought on by a particularly malevolent spirit known as Bellinus.  This spirit pressured her and swept her to the point of suicide. Her brother was a policeman and she managed to get a hold of his gun and before anyone could stop her, she took her own life. Three lives were ruined that day. Her own, her brother's and Mahatiel's. Like her brother, Mahatiel never forgave  himself for her loss...

Virginia Sills was born in Spokane, Washington. Her parents moved to Washington, DC  when she was six years old, where her father took a job as a civil engineer when he was honorably discharged after ten years of military service. Virginia grew up in the DC area and loved it. When her father decided to retire, her parents bought some land in South Dakota and moved out there while Virginia decided to pursue a career in law and attend GW University and work part time.  She and her father parted ways along those lines. He felt that her compassionate heart made her a perfect candidate for medical school. She, on the other hand, had other ideas....

Virginia is pretty, well built, shy and stands approximately 5’6”, and weighs 137 lbs. During her six week comatose stay in the hospital, she loses 10 lbs...

She has beautiful shoulder length black hair, reflecting a strong dose of Native American blood from her great grandfather on her mother’s side of the family. From her father’s side she inherited her fiery temper.

Her father’s father, Alroy Keegan was a full blooded Irishman who created quite a stir when he met and fell in love with her grandmother, Cecelia, a beautiful black woman who managed her own inn in New York in the early 1940’s.

A man of some wealth, and an heir of Irish royalty, he had come to America on business during the war when he’d stumbled upon her quaint inn. The two fell in love and threw caution to the wind. Both families were against the relationship and the marriage. Alroy’s father threatened to disinherit him if he married a black woman. He had said, No black woman would ever bear the name of Keegan as long as he was alive, and that he would strip his son of all land, royal titles and wealth if he married a commoner, and a black woman at that.

Cecelia’s father, still smarting from the open prejudice of the day, was also dead set against the marriage. But love would not be denied. Alroy told his father that he loved him very much, but that he loved Cecelia more than all the land and wealth and silver that the emerald isle could ever offer--even more than his name. As much as he loved Ireland and its lush rolling hills, he loved Cecelia more. So Alroy immigrated to America and changed his name to Sills. It was one of the most painful things that he had ever done, but their love was the kind of which dreams are truly made.

Cecelia and her family made amends eventually. Alroy and she lived happily together for 40 years till he passed away quietly in his sleep in 1982. Heart broken she passed a year later. Both stubborn as the day is long, Alroy and his father never reconciled…

It is from this heritage that Virginia inherited her temper and her determination....
