Lesson Four: Spiritual Combat—How Did the Lord Handle His Confrontations with The Enemy and How Did He Teach and Train His Disciples to Handle Them?

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him! And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him…Mark 1:25-26

In this Lesson, you will learn a number of things. The first thing you will learn is ‘how’ the Lord Jesus dealt with Satan and Demons. You will also learn the Lord’s ‘attitude’ toward them. You will also see how the disciples and the apostles treated them. This will reveal to us how ‘we’ should treat them. Buckle your seatbelts and let’s get to work…

                           Short Lecture

Note as you read through the Gospels that the Lord Jesus Christ had one consistent attitude against the enemy—He didn’t like him…

His attitude is portrayed by a scripture that King David wrote in the Old Testament:

“I hated them with perfect hatred…” Psalm 139:22. Note the word ‘perfect’ here. This is the Hebrew word, Takliyth, and could be translated ‘a complete and extreme hatred’. This is a far cry from the silly images that we have had in our minds in the past of Satan and God grudgingly working together. They don’t. Psa.94:20. God, the Father, sets on a Throne of

Righteousness. Satan, the Thief, Liar and Deceiver, sets on a Throne of Iniquity (Sin). That’s like water and oil—the two don’t mix. According to the Word, they don’t even like one another, “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the Wicked (One) every day”. Psa 7:11. Also note that David was inspired to write the Psalms by the Holy Spirit. So this accurately reflects not just David’s attitude toward the Devil and his minions, but the Holy Spirit’s as well. The same Holy Spirit who filled Jesus in His ministry on earth. This reflects therefore, the Father’s attitude, and therefore the Son’s attitude too!

“But Brother Humphrey”, I hear you say, “Didn’t the Lord tell the Devil to Tempt Job, in the Old Testament, to teach him something and doesn’t the Lord do the same thing with us today??”

We are under an entirely NEW Covenant now, because of the Lord Jesus Christ. Heb. 8:12&13, Heb. 9:15, 2 Cor. 3:6

I’m not saying that the Devil or his Minions will not come after you—they will, because you, as part of the Church and the Body of Christ, are the only true and real threat against him in the earth!

And if he can convince you, that the Lord ‘sent him’, and that the Lord wants him to ‘beat you up’, then you’ll just let him in, and he’ll beat the daylights out of you with sin, sickness, disease, poverty, fear, calamity, and tragedy!

Think.

You are a soldier in the Army of the Lord, right?

That means the Lord is the ‘General and Commander and Chief,’ right?

Think. What General and Commander and Chief , of an Army, asks the other Enemy General, to ‘please come over for a few minutes and teach his Army a few things by shooting them, killing them, running over them with a few tanks and beating them up’?

Or, even better yet, What Police Chief of any major City, goes out and hires a bunch of new Police Recruits, then goes down to the local Mafia Crime Boss and asks him to drop by the local Police Precinct and shoot, stab, beat up and fire-bomb it, in order to ‘teach the new Police Recruits there something’?

Can you see how ridiculous that is?

As a mother or father, you don’t drag your precious son or daughter down the street to the house that belongs to the crazy ‘Serial Killer’ you found out was living there and leave them with him for a few days in order for them to ‘learn how to appreciate and be grateful and thank you’. Do you? The answer is NO! Heck no! I don’t care how bad they were or how much they got on your nerves. YOU take care of them yourself, not turn them over to the local ‘Crazy Man’.

And, Therefore the answer to the two previous questions is also Heck no! The General Hires someone he trusts to Teach His troops—a qualified Drill Instructor!

The Police Chief Hires someone to Teach His Police Recruits—a Police Academy Instructor!

So too, the Heavenly Father already HAS someone that the Lord Jesus said is the Teacher, Trainer, Counselor, Instructor, of the Body of Christ!

And just incase you didn’t know—His name is NOT Satan.

It is, The HOLY Spirit, not a ‘Devilish’ spirit.

“But Brother Humphrey, what about Job?”

Do a real, and I mean a REAL indepth study of Job, particularly the first two chapters and what you will find is this. Our Heavenly Father never told the Devil, “Here, take Job on a silver platter and beat him up for me real good…”

Nor did He say, “ Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in all the earth?”

The Old Testament was originally written in the Hebrew language and translated into English, and sometimes it’s good to grab a Word Study book, like ‘The Complete Word Study Old Testament’ by Zodihiates, and especially ‘Robert Young’s Translation of the Bible’, and ‘Young’s Analytical Concordance’ and ‘Young’s Concise Commentary’ (after searching through many, it is now the only commentary I use, if I use any at all. I generally prefer to let the Holy Spirit commentate on His own work.), and study some of these passages ‘word for word’.

You would be amazed…

And even more importantly than that, you would come away with a more indepth, matured and more fully developed understanding of the Word of God...

In the literal Hebrew language, what the Lord actually said to Satan was:

I see you have set your heart against my servant Job, because there is none like him in all the earth…”THAT’s what the original Hebrew says.

In addition, there were several other things that Job himself did and said that unfortunately open the door to Satan. Job himself even says and addresses one of the very things himself that opened the door to the Devil. Perhaps we will develop and place a lesson exclusively on this topic on the website to address so many misconceptions about God and dear Brother Job, in the future…

But know THIS. God, our Heavenly Father, and even the Lord Jesus Christ Himself hath said, that The Holy Spirit, is the Official Teacher and Trainer that They have assigned to the Church—not Satan. And it is an insult to the majesty and integrity of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and the Holy Spirit to say otherwise… John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:12-14&15

Because Adam surrendered up the earth and all that it contained when he disobeyed God and obeyed Satan in the Garden of Eden. Mankind (through Adam) developed a ‘Carnal (Sinful) Nature’. This new nature was received

by Adam and Eve the very second they disobeyed God. Satan thought his strategy was brilliant—and it was—because since he caught Adam and Eve before they had children, he knew that they would produce children ‘after their own kind’, meaning: They would produce children exactly like themselves in every way. Including in their sinful spiritual natures, therefore Satan knew in order for his plan to work flawlessly, he needed to get through to them early, and, he did. Therefore every human being since, has been born with a sin nature…

This ‘Sin Nature’ is connected directly to Satan. Haven’t you ever wondered why God just didn’t destroy Satan after he had messed up mankind?

Because if He had destroyed him after The Fall, then everything that had a Sin Nature and everything connected to him (Satan) would have been destroyed with him. And inspite of what Adam and Eve had done, God truly still loved them. So, God pulled out from His ‘Readiness File’, The Plan of Salvation, without Satan’s knowledge or awareness, and He instituted it step by step. The only thing Satan knew was to watch out for a ‘big foot’ coming his way…(Gen. 3:15)  So, as flawless as Satan thought his plan to be, and brilliant though it was, there was one more wiser and more brilliant than he.

God…

Jesus’ Attitude…

I’ve said frequently that the Lord Jesus didn’t like the Devil. Well, lets let the original scriptures and the principles thereof prove it…

In Mark 1:25 The Lord Jesus Christ is ‘rebuking’ an unclean spirit. There’s nothing unusual about that, right? But did you know that there are two words in the original Greek language that mean ‘rebuke’?

One Greek word, ‘elegcho’ means a rebuke that results in the repentance of the person being rebuked, to elicit from him or her a confession of their sin..

The second Greek word for rebuke is ‘epitimao’. It means a powerful rebuke, but rebuke which fails to bring the person to a point of repenting of his sin. This rebuke, ‘epitimao’, is ALWAYS the kind of rebuke the Lord uses on Satan and his demons, because He knows they are incorrigible, and will NEVER repent. In Mark 1:25 The Lord also tells the demon spirit to be silent. The King James says, “Hold thy peace…”The Greek word used here is ‘phimoo’. The Greek Scholar and expert Kenneth S. Wuest, who taught at the prestigious Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill., has this to say, that it means…

“…to stop the mouth, make speechless, reduce to silence.”

He then goes on to say…

“…The words, ‘Hold thy peace’, are not an adequate rendering. The word is much more vigorous than that. Martin Luther translates by the German equivalent of our, “Shut up!” The (King James) Authorized version puts too high a polish on the sharp incisive command of our Lord. From the later (the command of our Lord to the demon), we can gather something of the attitude of God towards Satan, the other fallen angels, the demons and the enormity of their sin.   The verb is in the imperative mode and the aorist, (meaning that it is) issuing a sharp command to be obeyed at once. The same holds true of the command, “Come out”.

So, please do not let anyone convince you that the Devil is ‘working for God’. He’s not. He’s a crazy renegade spirit who thought he could beat God and failing that, he thought he would break God’s heart by destroying what He (God) loved the most.

You

There is an incredible danger that we as Christians face in today’s world… That danger is relying on what other people say the Bible says, and not digging into the Word of God on our own to actually see what it says for ourselves. This, is why we give you the scriptural references so that you can read them yourself.

Hold onto your hats. Because rather than tell you the answers from here on, I’m going to let the Holy Spirit, from the Bible, tell you the answers Himself in what you READ.

Let’s get to work…

Action Steps…

If you have taken the time to review, read, study and meditate each and every scripture accompanying this lesson you should then know the answer to the following question…

What are the Action Steps you should take the very next time Satan or his Minions try to harass you, your loved ones or others? Christians or other victims. Remember. What did Jesus do? What did He train the Disciples to do, 1st the 12, then the 70, then the 120, then the 500? And what did He authorize YOU to do?
